Fitness enthusiasts of Mylapore have a new stomping ground — the southeastern section of Nageswara Rao Park.
On March 20, Mylapore MLA R. Nataraj inaugurated an open-air gym in this part of the park. This gym is said to be the first of its kind in Zone 9.
Sponsored by Atria Convergence Technologies (ACT) Limited, the gym has twelve fitness equipment, which include a bench ab cruncher, an arm wheel, a waist trainer ski machine and an air walker.
“Following suggestions from many residents and walkers that a gym be introduced at the park, there was a deliberation on our part. The outcome was an outdoor gym. We approached ACT which has handled a similar project in Bengaluru. As the equipment at this gym are mechanical in nature, they are more durable,” says Nataraj. According to an official of Zone 9 of Greater Chennai Corporation, the plot was earlier used for playing badminton. “We cleared the plot and laid interlocking blocks to create a smooth surface,” he adds.
“I am a regular walker at the park. The gym equipment here are a bonus. They are an inspiration to exercise every day,” says Mumtaj, a resident of Mylapore.
According to the rule book, children are not allowed to use outdoor gyms. “But those children who have the strength to use these equipment, can do do,” says the official.
“We plan to place a cover over this gym at Nageswara Rao Park. We are also considering suggestions from some women users to have separate timings for them,” says the MLA.
As part of the MLA’s plans to introduce outdoor gyms in many other public facilities, he has identified the playground at Pallakku Manickam. A space at the playground is being readied for the purpose.
