As a cascading effect of Kollywood strike early this year. Every passing week sees a rush of new releases which results in many small, medium budget not being able to get the necessary window to generate word of mouth and pick up. Many films get removed from the screens after the first week despite getting positive reviews.
This week sees four new direct Tamil releases Viz..’Lakshmi’, ‘Merku Thodarchi Malai’, ‘Echarikkai Idhu Manidhargal Nadamadum Idam’ and ‘Kalari’. Next week will be worse.
At least seven new Tamil films are competing to hit the screens on August 30-31. Even as ‘Kolamavu Kokila’ is running successfully, Nayanthara’s another film ‘Imaikka Nodigal’ has been confirmed to hit the screens on August 30, 2018 that is on the forthcoming Friday. Apart from this six films are expected to release on the next day. Vikram Prabhu, The makers of Prakash Raj starrer ’60 Vayadhu Maaniram’, Dinesh’s ‘Annanukku Jai’, Pa Vijay starrer ‘Aarudra’, Samuthirakani starrer ‘Aan Devathai’. Arvin Swamy starrer ‘Naragasooran’ and ‘Vanjagar Ulagam’ have locked August 31 as their release date.
However a few films are expected to back off due to non-availability of theatres. But it looks like, there will be at least 3-4 new releases next week also.
It is high time, the Kollywood organisations sit together and plan the releases in a way that benefits all kinds of producers and filmmakers.
